An Analysis of Angola’s National Diamond Company Strategy: From
Centuries-Old Mapping to Cutting-Edge Socio-Economic Impact. Preparing
for the Future with Governance and Innovation.
By AIMC Staff Writer
As the Angola International Mining Conference (AIMC2025) draws near, the
prominence of companies such as ENDIAMA E.P. is no accident. Rather, it is the
result of a centuries-long journey and a vigorous transformation process.
ENDIAMA, as a Titanium Sponsor of this landmark event, invites us to look at the
Angolan diamond sector not merely for its extractive value, but for its capacity to
transform natural resources into pillars of human development and sustainability.
The history of diamond activity in Angola, which began in the Angolan Northeast,
dates back to the 16th century—a heritage that ENDIAMA, as the successor to
the former Diamang, has carried for over 100 years. Understanding this tradition
is fundamental to appreciating its current Leadership, which seeks to shape a
sustainable and respected mining sector. The company is not merely operating;
it seeks to create leaders with skills for the future, involving partners in inclusive
decision-making processes.
Transforming Tradition with Engineering and Innovation
ENDIAMA is undergoing a profound transformation, investing in the consolidation
of its own projects – 24 in prospecting and 24 in production – and moving towards
becoming an engineering company. Innovation is proving to be the key to this
success, with the company opening itself up to the development of Information
and Communication Technologies tailored to the sector and valuing new
techniques for prospecting and mining operations.
This dynamism is reflected in the figures. The Angolan diamond subsector
employs 28,836 staff, of which 21,784 are direct and 7,042 are indirect, with
ENDIAMA anticipating increasing the workforce to 35,000 staff by 2027. Investing
in Human Capital is a strategic imperative, offering continuous opportunities for
staff growth through training, with an average of 100 workers benefiting annually.
Rigour and competence are valued, enabling staff to achieve excellence. In 2024,
the company recruited and selected 150 young graduates in geosciences and
geoengineering—a clear effort to reinforce and renew the mining projects’
workforce.
The Strategy of Diversification and Vertical Integration
One of the strongest signs of ENDIAMA’s forward-looking vision lies in
diversification and increasing the value chain. The company has been expanding
its areas of activity, which today comprise mining, logistics and transport, health,
security, social responsibility, sport, and agribusiness. The establishment of
strategic subsidiaries, such as ENDIAGRO – Sociedade Agro-Industrial, Lda.,
aims to drive the diversification process of the economic base in mining areas,
fostering agro-industry and job creation.
In 2024, ENDIAMA demonstrated concrete steps towards the sector’s vertical
integration. Production in recovered carats totalled 13.96 million, with revenues
reaching Usd 1.49 billion. The projection for 2025 is ambitious: recovering 14.8
million carats and generating gross revenues of Usd 2.13 billion, with the Moquita
project coming into production.
The company has strengthened its position in the field of diamond cutting, with
the inauguration of the “Robust Diam, Indústria de Diamantes” factory and the
acquisition of a 70% share in the Kapu Gems factory. The expansion of the
diamond value chain and entry into the jewellery and gold refining market are
foreseen, culminating in the inauguration of the Gold Refinery in 2025. This step
will position ENDIAMA as a strategic player in the global gold market, ensuring
greater added value for locally extracted minerals
Governance as a Pillar of Global Trust
In an increasingly demanding global market, the commitment to the highest
standards of ethics and compliance proves to be a non-negotiable pillar.
ENDIAMA’s Compliance Programme is based on applying international
benchmark standards and complying with internal laws and policies for
combating corruption, extending to all partners. The programme’s guidelines—
which include a Code of Conduct and Ethics, and policies on Compliance,
Whistleblower Protection, Risk Management, and Donations and/or
Sponsorships—set a solid path for consolidating the company’s position in the
global market. The institution of the Whistleblower Channel in 2024 reinforces
continuous efforts to stimulate transparency.
Angola’s adherence, in 2022, to the Extractive Industries Transparency
Initiative (EITI) emerged to enhance good governance instruments. ENDIAMA,
as a representative member, actively collaborates to meet the objectives of
transparency and corruption prevention.
The Legacy that Transcends Generations: Social Responsibility and Sustainability
ENDIAMA understands that true thought leadership lies in transforming diamonds
into lasting legacies. Its actions for Social Responsibility and Environmental
Sustainability, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), seek
to create a positive impact that transcends generations.
Investment in social projects, which reached millions of dollars in 2024, focuses
on the construction of essential infrastructure. Examples include the rehabilitation
of schools and vocational training centres (such as CEFOPE, with ISO
certifications), the promotion of health and well-being through the Sagrada
Esperança Clinic, and the improvement of housing conditions. The Brilhante
Foundation plays a pivotal role in promoting social and community projects.
In the domain of Environmental Sustainability, the focus lies on managing
environmental impacts, the conservation and recovery of degraded areas (302
hectares recovered in 2024), and the development of the Degraded Areas
Recovery Programme (PRAD). Participation in COP 29 reinforces ENDIAMA’s
commitment to global sustainability practices.
Looking to the Future: Consolidating the Global Position
The outlook for 2025 and the coming years is clear: to consolidate Leadership
and legacy. ENDIAMA intends to conclude the partial dispersal of share capital
on the stock exchange to promote greater transparency and strengthen corporate
governance. In parallel, the exploration of strategic minerals, such as gold, and
the consolidation of innovative agricultural projects through ENDIAGRO, aim to
ensure the sustainability of mining communities and the strengthening of the local
economy.
The company continues to expand the tracking system for national diamond
production, ensuring transparency, and to strengthen strategic partnerships, such
as the memorandum with the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) for the
promotion of Angolan natural diamonds.
ENDIAMA E.P. is positioned as a driver of development for Angola, where
every carat extracted must correspond to a firm step in socio-economic progress.
Its role at AIMC2025 is not merely to sponsor an event; it is to invite the global
industry to witness and participate in a model of thought leadership that seeks to
harmonise resource extraction with the creation of a more sustainable, ethical,
and prosperous future for the Angolan people.
